Upskill Yourself

As North Carolina starts to move toward Phase 2 and easing more restrictions, we have decided to spend a little bit of time focusing on looking forward at ways that we can prepare for what the world will look like. One way that we can all do this is by learning something new. Take the time now to "upskill" yourself!

Here are a few easy steps to consider:

  1. What skill do you not possess that would make doing some function of your job easier? Perhaps learning more about Excel could be of benefit to you. Now is the time to take advantage of free resources to learn a new skill.
  2. What technology would you like to learn how to use? For me personally, with the rise in need for e-learning, I have had to spend some time learning more about online video recording. Yesterday I learned how to work with Adobe Premiere Pro. I am by no means a "pro" at the program yet, but I am learning the features with the help of the program itself and the myriad of resources online.
  3. What relationships would I like to build? This could be the time to reach out to a colleague you have wanted to collaborate with and start talking about a project. Get the creative ideas flowing and make a plan for something great down the road!
  4. What gaps can you close that are keeping you from moving ahead in your career? Take a look at job search sites like LinkedIn and Indeed for job descriptions similar to yours (or ones you might want in the future). Look for requirements of that position that you may be lacking and take some time to learn about those skills. Build your range and become more of a generalist!
These are just a few examples of questions you can ask to see where you can build capacity. These do not need to be major time commitments, and they don't have to cost anything! Take a look at these resources for some free online courses
